RE: Gas vx Diesel performance?

I personally don't know all the little details on what pulls or pushes the most. But I will tell you I have had two V-10's, one in a class C and the other in a class A. They were ok. But once I did the test drive in the 40'DP, that's what I wanted. It runs well and pretty darn fast. I think the mpg is pretty good. + or - about 10. And very quite. The rear engine is excellent. I personally can drive and drive and drive. The air ride is wonderful. I enjoyed my gassers, but I will tell you this, if I had to go back to gasser, I would be out of the RV business. I want to go to the tag axle and 8 to 10 air bags, but the DW say it will be awhile. Who knows, we're going to the big RV Show at Hershey PA in two weeks, maybe she'll see something that catches her eye. good luck with your purchase. RE: Myrtle Beach SC

Oct in Myrtle is a great time to go. Most all the campgrounds require you park you bike in their secure area. I have been going to Pirateland Family Campground for 25+ yrs. It's south, very nice, not as big as LakeWood or OceanLakes that are next door. The area for the bikes are straight across fro the entrance gate that always has a guard. We have had out bikes there a couple of time and no problem. Actually I had a battery problem once and they let me connect the battery tender. Don't worry about the traffic or finding a place to eat or shop. The season is over down there a it's a great time. Actually it nice for motorcycle riding. The summer is not good at all. To hot and traffic moves too slow. Was just there for 2 1/2 weeks in August. Labor Day to Memorial Day is a wonderful time in the area. Now Jan and Feb can get a little cold or cooler but it ok. I really like the place and would move there tomorrow if the DW would go. Oh well, Hank

RE: Carefree Awning on the Dynasty

I to have the auto. I do not leave long unattended if poor weather coming. I recently returned from Myrtle Beach. I was the number one campsite just off the beach. So we had some wind. Each day I would roll the awning out, flip the disengage switch and strap the awning down, kinda like the old traditional. The end with the shock when pulled with the strap would allow for a little slope. The was ok for light rain. But if heavy rain in the outlook, it goes up. And at night I would put it up. Took me all of about 2 minutes with a little step ladder to do the job. I have a passenger side slide, so the awning is pretty much straight out and approx 9' in the air. It was easy. But don't forget to disengage. You don't want the wind sensor trying to roll it up. There is no way without strapping this unit down and disengaging I could have used this type of awning that close to the shore. I was gun shy at first. But no problem and actually it took less time than the traditional. I was just at a 10 day fair and disengaged and did the tie-down. It was windy and rained one day. The water ran off with no problem. good luck and just don't ass-u-me with these units. Get to know them, because there an expensive operator error costs. Hank

RE: Fueling up at Flying J

I always use Flying-J. Just returned from a trip down south. Stopped at the normal fill points coming and going. I don't use the card. I have one. But I use my Visa and get better points. I occasionally want to fly to California to see the grand-kids so I work on point there and have had a few flights. I personally don't concern myself with a penny here and there on a fill up. And I don't like to walk all the way inside and do what you have to do. I swipe my card and I'm on my way. I was a little disapointed at one J on 95. It stopped at 100 bucks. But I swiped again and was on my way. I try not to get much below a half a tank. Oh well, Hank in Central PA

RE: Phaeton at the Hershey Show

I to will be at the Hershey Show. I was looking at what RV Dealers and manufacturers would be there on their web site. I would go to the site and click on the dealer out from Tiffin and see what there bringing. YOu can give them a call and see what will be there. Now I know last year is a little different than this year, but you pretty much can get the same deal at the dealer that you get at the show. I did that several years ago. I'm sure the way the industry is there will be some wheeling and dealing. But local dealer are dealing right now somewhat on the big rigs. But trade-ins aren't the best. So what do you do. I guess if you have cash it would be a sweet deal on anything. It will be an interesting show. I do know several dealers that will not be present. I spoke with a salesperson that became a friend from the NY area. The had a sizable display and they aren't coming due to the downturn. We'll see in a couple of weeks. Hank in Central PA

RE: Generator Air vs. Dash Air

Just returned from a trip to Myrtle Beach the first two weeks in August. I ran the generator and both airs going down because it was hot and we had three additional folks traveling with us and a little sleeping in the rear going down. I try to run at night. We stopped at a Flying-J and slept 4hrs or so. We probably ran the generator and airs 16hrs going down. Now coming back, it was still hot. As soon as I disconnected from shore power the DW started the generator and front air since it was just the two of us returning home. To be perfectly honest with you, I know there is more fuel useage but I really couldn't tell much difference. I use the generator a lot. But I keep it serviced. At one time we would start the gen and air when we stopped to eat or any length of time to keep the dogs cool. I just use it now. Everything I have read and it makes lots of sense to me. Most problems with RVs is lack of use. Hank

RE: HWH JACK PARTS

I strongly agree with Handyman. Call Stacy. He's excellent with his knowledge and service. I can't remember how long it took to get back to me, but I do know the e-mail was pretty quick. I operate a service company myself. And it's most important to try try to get back to folks daily but sometimes and maybe in Stacy's case he kinda being a go to guy and there could be a delay. Be patient. HWH will take care of you. Hank

RE: Which of these options should I pay extra for?

Upgrade on the mentioned items. At this point, what's a couple grand more here and there. The only thing I would probably think about would be the AC. But the deal is pretty good and I would probably go with the AC. hank

RE: Freaking out about which brand to go with

Are you talking about the RV show in Hershey, PA mid-September. If you are, that's a good show. Or it has been in the past. With the industry downturn could be interesting. I got an e-mail from a saleperson friend from NY that I was somewhat dealing with a couple of years ago and he said they would not be there this year due to the industry situation. So if your close this year attending might be interesting to see what manufacturers are in attendance. Might say a lot about them during this time. Who's stable enough to come or has dollars to risk attending. There's a bunch of companies not presently operating. But then again, this is not the first time there has been a downturn with companies going out of business. The strong will survive if their product is good and most of all, Customer Service. see ya in Hershey, Hank

RE: N.C. RV owners take note

Ran I-95 several times the last couple of weeks in the DP towing a Jeep. I'm over 40'. Ran at night and day. Weigh stations were open with officers parked an exit on one of the stations. I zipped right by with no problems as I do all of them. But then again I look like a happy camper towing a jeep in a 40' DP. I use to tow an 18' trailer with two motorcycles in a class c. Never was stopped or experienced any problems. I would think if you look the part of a happy camper and obey the speed limits it's doubtful they will have an interest in you. But then again the more commerical you look the more you have a chance of getting pulled over. I'm kinda thinkin there's more to the store and then again not. oh well, maybe I have just been lucky, Hank

RE: RV Repair Business

I just returned from a two trip to Pirateland Famly Campground in Myrtle Beach, SC. The first week in August the campground was full and all the Park Homes booked. The second week Park Homes still booked. The campground was 90% full and the beach crowded. I must say I was surprised. But there was not much running out to eat of the evening. I noticed just about every site folks were cooking. In years past folks would come and go all the time of the evening, going out to eat and shopping. One day the wife and daughter went to the mall. Weather was beautiful. They said very few people. The last week it rained on Wednesday and you couldn't walk in the mall. I ask one of the shoppers how had business been and the flow of people. He said compared to last summer the flow of people was about the same, but only 25% spending money. So sales of products and goods are off. But the motels and campgrounds were pretty much the same as it has been there for the 20yrs I have been going there. So folks are still camping. I guess spending their monies to get where there going and just staying put. I was pleasantly surprise by the cost of fuel. I left Central with $5.25 per gallon in the DP. I fueled up going down at a Fly-in J btw Richmond and DC on 95. Cost was $4.34 about. On down the road at the SC exit to go over the Myrtle, the Fly-in J was $4.24 + or -. Don't remember exactly. But coming back I went all the way to the same J btw Richmond and DC on 95. I think $4.05 to $4.10. That's good for me. I had figured to spend atleast $5.00 a gallon for my budget. So I'm a few dollars ahead. So we'll take another trip soon. Hank

RE: Starting Cummins engine after extended shut down

I put my Cummins to bed last mid-November. Filled her full of good fresh fuel, parked her in the back drive, and covered. The end of March I undercovered her, got in and turned the key as I do when in use. The unit started normally. No problem. But every year, no matter how many miles the first thing I do is change fluids and filters before any travel. Have done about 5000 no problem miles this year. And don't forget the generator. Use it or loss it. Hours don't hurt a generator. Service that once a year. As for batteries, I had to purchase new last spring. Flipped the switch wrong, thought I had power going to them because I was plugged in and they froze in Central PA. They need replaced anyway. Good luck, Hank

RE: So what do you guys use your rigs for?

My coach is my hobby. When not using and that's more than I like, I'm always messing with it, adjusting, waxing and such. Kinda like when I had motorcycles. But when we have time we're going down to our campsite for the weekend, we do several Nascar Races a year, we'll do a KountryStar rally this fall at the Hershey RV Show, and of course, being in Central PA and about 12 miles from Beaver Stadium, we're at all the Penn State home football games. And this evening will be headed south to Myrtle Beach, SC for two weeks, staying at Pirateland. So I guess you could say we're using it ok for still working. But I will tell you it's a hobby and in no way can I justify the cost of RV-ing other than hobby and a way of life at this time. Love it, and hope to do a lot more in about 6 yrs. Hank

RE: Trailer Life or Motor Home?

I get Motor Home. Did get Trailer Life, but found more info that applies to my type of RV-ing in Motor Home. But depending on what type of camping and such you do, both are pretty good rags. Hank

RE: Class A sales down 54%

Sign of the times. I certainly wouldn't want to be in a position that I had to sell at this time. Just like trying to sell a home. It's been like this before and it will turn around. The strong will survive and those that don't probably shouldn't be in business anyway. On the hand, it's probably a pretty good time to move up if you can afford it. There are some pretty good deals on very good units out there. It will be interesting this fall at the Big RV Show at Hershey, PA to see what type of deals are there. When time were good they had some pretty good deals. IMHO, Hank

RE: Adding a freezer in the basement

I wouldn't be without my Norcold Freezer. It certainly was not a selling item for the coach at the time of the purchase and I told the salesperson. I said great, it has a fridge in the belly. Not a big deal. It is now. I gotta have that option in the future. Now can you do without. Of course. I did on two previous units. But it so nice to keep items in this area you don't use all the time. It give you more room with options. We kinda fill in from there to the regular fridge and we run low on water, soda, and such. It a gotta have for me. IMHO Hank

RE: IT STINKS

Make sure the traps in the sinks and showers have water in those areas during travel. I use little chemicals in my gray and black tanks. But I do use Caligon beads in those tanks. It really helps keep things cleaned out when you dump. It's amazing how clean the second dump is when you just fill with water to clean out. Close the back windows close to vents when traveling too. Or just burn a candle.. just kiddin, Hank

RE: RV Bras or Masks

I use to have bras until I got a coach with a Diamond Shield. I like the bras but would probably request the DS on the next coach also instead of the bra. hank

RE: dont buy a coachmen class a motorhome!

Some dealers ok, and some somewhat ok, and others not good at all. I have had several units over the years. And with each purchased I learned to get more involved early on with any repairs, either warranty or not. And in some cases I have called the manufacturer of whatever product I had questions on. Like the dish company, leveler (HWH), Spartan/Cummins/Newmar. And I will say my dealer is ok, But I have certainly learned more by making a phone call so I fully understand what is going on. I have never had a bad experience communicating directly with the product on the coach in question. I have certainly learned more seeking info on my own and talking directly to the manufacturer of the product on the coach in question. Dealers/SVC Techs just can't know in detail about everything. I kinda think you should have beat the bushes earlier. But with each experience and trade hopefully we learn. I'm been doing this for 30yrs and I learn with each unit. And I must say every trip no matter how new the unit I'm a little edgy till I get back home. It's worth it though. Hank
